History of the Group

The Australian Shipbuilding & Repair Group (ASRG) was formed as a result of a merger between the Australian Shipbuilders Association (established 1963) and the Australian Ship Repairers Group (established 1971).  Records indicate that the predecessor of the Australian Shipbuilders Association may have been formed prior to WWII.

The ASRG is the recognised peak industry body representing and promoting the capability of the wider Australian shipbuilding and repair industry sectors (ship construction, repair and sustainment, and supply chain) to both the domestic and international markets. Member companies are strategically located in ports throughout Australia.

Since the late 1970s, Australian shipbuilders’ innovative designs and construction techniques established Australia as the world leader in the production of lightweight high-speed ferries. ASRG member companies produce and service a vast range of vessels including Ferries, Super Yachts, Offshore Crew/Supply, Fishing, Patrol and other Naval vessels.

ASRG member companies provide services to the shipping industry including voyage repairs, major refits, conversions, dry-dockings and slippings, hull and machinery repairs, mechanical and electrical repairs and maintenance.

The ASRG provides professional, independent, impartial representation to assist the Australian shipbuilding and repair industry sectors, especially through representation to Government, including to the International Maritime Organisation, media etc.
