| History of the Association and Status of the Industry |
| History of the Group |
In August, 1971, companies involved in ship repair in Australia met to discuss the future of their industry. It was felt that the industry needed a central organisation to provide a forum for industry matters and to promote its interests. Collectively, our repair facilities are more than adequate to service fleets operating on the Australian Coast. Individually, a high standard of business ethics has been maintained throughout the industry, and management and the workforce have been advancing simultaneously with new techniques. It was felt that an association of the individual companies would further foster progress to the benefit of the Shipowner. Australia is an island continent with its major population areas spread around its 12,000 miles of coastline. It is vitally dependent upon shipping for the daily conduct of its business and the welfare of its people. Shipping, it its turn, requires a viable, well-equipped and highly skilled repair industry to ensure effective and efficient operation. As a result of that inaugural meeting, the Australian Ship Repairers Group was founded, industry objectives established, standard contract conditions prepared and policies for the future formulated. |

The Ship |
A large proportion of all ship repair work undertaken in Australia is performed by members of the ASRG. Minor running repairs to major refits and conversions are undertaken. Modern capital equipment ensures the use of the latest techniques. Our tradesmen are highly skilled in all technologies and widely respected by both local and overseas clients. Every opportunity is taken to up-grade their expertise (in advance) as vessel equipment become more sophisticated. Operating codes are continually updated to ensure the safety of vessels and many companies have achieved or are working towards accreditation to ISO 9002 (AS 3902) for Ship Repairs and Maintenance Services. Repair crews are available on a 24 hour 7 day week basis, if required. Individual facilities and capacities of member companies are detailed here. |
